Welcome to Year 6 – Hawthorne
Mr Butler
Learning Update
In Literacy, we have been studying the book Stonewall. It is a true story about the real-life Stonewall Inn in New York City, which became a symbol of hope and inclusion for outsiders. We have written newspaper reports as well as creative pieces writing from the perspective of the building!
In Maths, we have been learning about decimals. We have multiplied and divided them by 10, 100, and 1000, as well as solving problems involving decimals.
In Geography, we have been looking at the physical features of the Arctic and Antarctic, such as ice floes, icebergs, and boreal forests. We have also explored how the tilt of the Earth causes 24 hours of sunlight or darkness at the poles.
In Science, we have continued our work on Electricity and Circuits. We have created circuits and tested various components like buzzers and motors.
In PE, we have started practising tag rugby. We have learned about utilising space to gain ground on the opposition.
In DT, we have been studying bridges and how they can be strengthened. We have looked at examples such as suspension and arch bridges.
Coming up…
- In Literacy, we will start the book Suffragette.
- In Maths, we will focus on decimal word problems.
- In Science, we will test different electrical components.
- In DT, we will design, create, and evaluate bridges!
