Welcome to Hazel Class

Here are some photographs of our lovely learning environment so you can see our classroom. In Hazel Class, our teacher is Miss Poole. Our teaching assistants are called Mrs Randall and Miss Coward. We also have some other support staff who will visit us to help.

Mrs Andreas supports us during the week and teaches PSHE.

Summer term 2025

Topic

Our topic for the first half-term is Big Wide World. We will be exploring maps, learning about different modes of transport, and discovering more about our global community.

We’ll learn about various places around the world and think about destinations we’d like to visit. We’ll also explore animals from different parts of the world and the unique environments they live in.

Our outside area will be transformed into a travel agents, where we’ll design passports, book holidays, and create tickets as part of our continuous provision.

Phonics

At Oaklands we follow the Little Wandle Phonics scheme. This term we will move onto our Phase 4 learning.

In Phase 4, children consolidate their knowledge of phonemes and graphemes learnt in the earlier phases. The focus is on blending and segmenting longer words with adjacent consonants, such as frog, trap, and milk.

Children do not learn any new sounds in this phase but instead build fluency in reading and spelling words with more complex structures. They also continue to develop tricky word recognition, sentence reading, and early writing skills.

Please visit the parents page on the Little Wandle Website for more support and guidance.

Maths

In Maths, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme. This half term, we will be focusing on numbers to 20 and beyond.

The children will learn to count, recognise, and represent numbers up to and beyond 20, using a range of manipulatives to support their understanding. We will explore the structure of teen numbers—for example, understanding that 14 is made up of 1 ten and 4 ones—and use tens frames to help us represent this visually.

PE

Our PE unit this half-term is Ball Skills. The children will develop their coordination, control, and movement through a range of activities using different types of balls. They will practise skills such as rolling, throwing, catching, bouncing, and kicking, both individually and with a partner.

Reminders:

  • PE is now on a Monday. Please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit on this day.
  • Guided reading will take place throughout the week, so please send in reading folders every day.
  • Library books will be changed on a Tuesday.
  • Reading books will be collected in on a Thursday and will then be changed for Friday.

Please get in contact if you have any questions.
