Learning Update

Literacy
In Literacy, we have finished our work on The BFG. The children planned their own stories using a storyboard to map out a clear beginning, middle, and end. Each story stars an original giant and a human character. After planning, the children wrote each section of their story in detail, with a particular focus on including dialogue in the middle section. Next week, we will begin a new text linked to our driver topic Rocks, Relics and Rumbles. The book is Escape from Pompeii, which will support both our reading and wider curriculum learning.

Geography
In Geography, the children have been learning about volcanoes. They have explored the different parts of a volcano and learned about the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and the disaster that destroyed the city of Pompeii.

Music
Our Music lessons have also linked to the theme of volcanoes. The children listened carefully to a piece of music and discussed how the tempo, pace, and beat helped to create a sense of movement and tension, linking these musical features to the idea of a volcanic eruption.

Maths
In Maths, we have been dividing two-digit numbers by one-digit numbers, including calculations where there is a remainder. Alongside this, we have been revising the 3 and 4 times tables and using this knowledge to solve scaled calculations. For example, if we know that 3 × 4 = 12, we can use this to work out that 30 × 4 = 120 by scaling the number up by 10.

PE
In PE, we have finished our line dance unit, where children learned and performed a sequence of coordinated steps. We are now beginning to think creatively about dances linked to superheroes, focusing on strong movements, poses, and expressive actions.

Art
In Art, we have completed our topic on people and places. The children explored our local environment by walking around the school and sketching different areas to represent our urban surroundings. They then chose one section of the school to develop further using oil pastels, carefully selecting colours to reflect their feelings and impressions of that space.
