Welcome to Year 6 – Hawthorne

Mr Butler

Learning Update

In Literacy, we are reading The Boy in the Tower—an exciting story about a family escaping killer plants! We have planned our own narratives based on this structure and have used it to practise areas of grammar such as colons, semi-colons, and hyphens.

In Maths, we have been learning about shape. We have looked at finding the area and perimeter of various 2-D shapes including quadrilaterals and triangles. We have also explored angles in shapes, measuring these using a protractor and calculating them using known rules, for example, that angles in a triangle sum to 180 degrees.

In Geography, we have been studying tourism in the Arctic and Antarctic. We observed some of the rules tourists must abide by to visit these fragile environments.

In Science, we have continued our topic on Electricity and Circuits. We have tested various components such as buzzers and motors.

In PE, we have started practising netball. We have learned about utilising different passes to find space and how to best attack the opposition.

In French, we have begun learning how to describe what is in our pencil case.

In DT, we have been exploring bridges and how they can be strengthened. We have tested our theories using tape, straws, and paper to create load-bearing structures.

Coming up…

  • Literacy: Writing narratives based on The Boy in the Tower
  • Maths: Investigating circles
  • PE: Netball tournament
  • DT: Designing, creating, and evaluating bridges
