Sycamore
Welcome to Year 4!
We are Sycamore Class 2024/2025
Welcome to the Summer Term!
This is where you can find out about our learning in Year 4, our current topics and any useful websites to help you at home.
Our Summer topic is all about ‘Exploring Ancient Egypt’. In this topic, we will be learning about everyday life in ancient Egyptian cities, the role of a pharaoh and the hierarchy structure. Along with researching tales from the tomb and the famous Tutankhamun’s treasures.
In addition, we will be following the national curriculum requirements of English, maths, Science, PSHE/RSE and RE.
English
We will be reading the texts: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe by C.S. Lewis, Jabberwocky and other Nonsense by Lewis Carroll and The Story of Tutankhamun by Patricia Cleveland-Peck.
Maths
We will be building on prior knowledge and learning about Decimals, Money, Time, Shape, Statistics, Position and Direction. Within all of these topics, we will be solving word problems, developing reasoning skills and using our times tables knowledge.
PSHE/RSE
We follow the SCARF scheme which is delivered by Miss McGrath on a Tuesday afternoon. This half-term our topic is 'Growing and Changing'.
P.E.
P.E. will take place on a Monday afternoon with Mrs Bell and a Tuesday afternoon led by Mrs Bissmire. Please send children to school wearing their P.E. kit on these days. The P.E. kit consists of a sky-blue polo, royal blue Oaklands jumper, royal blue shorts, socks and suitable sports trainers. Hair must be tied back and any jewellery must be removed at home.
Computing and Music
This term, Year 4 will be learning how to use a search engine to locate information, to structure questions to search effectively, to answer queries and identify reliable information sources. We will also be having lots of fun using an app called Busy Beats to understand music, the main elements of music and how to compose a piece of electronic music.
French
Language Angels is the scheme we use for French teaching at Oaklands. This term the children will learning about animals.
Homework
Homework is a valuable opportunity for children to consolidate their learning, as well as get parents involved in our topics. Homework will be sent home in red A4 homework books every other Friday and will have an individual hand-in date, clearly displayed on it.
Reading
We expect children to read every night (for around 15 minutes – please comment on your child’s reading record). Please ensure that you regularly hear your child read aloud. As they grow, it is important to foster a love of reading within them. A fantastic way to do this is to have discussions about the books they are reading and to listen to them read. It is also important that they hear an adult reading aloud, with intonation and expression (sharing a book together is an excellent way to model these skills to your child). Reading books will be changed on a Monday and each pupil will take two books home depending on their level of reading ability. Please make sure children have their books available in school every day.
Times Table Rockstars
Daily Maths practice to ensure that gaps are continually being filled.
