Learning Update
Maths
In Year 4, the children have been developing their understanding of shapes, statistics and angles through a range of practical and engaging maths activities. They have explored the properties of 2D shapes by identifying and comparing their sides and lines of symmetry, while also learning to recognise and classify angles as right, acute or obtuse. In statistics, the children have interpreted and presented information using tables, bar charts and pictograms, answering questions and drawing conclusions from the data collected. Through these activities, they have strengthened their reasoning and problem-solving skills and shown growing confidence in applying their mathematical knowledge in a variety of contexts.
Literacy
Year 4 have thoroughly enjoyed exploring The Baker by the Sea by Paula White, using the story to inspire their writing. The children have been developing their use of descriptive devices, including similes, metaphors and expanded noun phrases, to create vivid descriptions of characters, settings and events. They have also explored the different jobs and roles featured within the story, such as fishermen, blacksmiths and butchers, describing the important work they carried out and the skills required using ambitious and imaginative vocabulary. It has been wonderful to see the children confidently applying these techniques to produce engaging and detailed pieces of writing.
Science
Year 4 have been exploring their science topic on electrical conductors and insulators, developing their understanding of how different materials allow electricity to pass through them. The children have investigated a range of everyday materials to identify which are good conductors and which are insulators, learning that metals are often effective conductors because electricity can flow through them more easily. They have also explored why some materials conduct electricity better than others and considered how this knowledge is applied in everyday objects, such as electrical wires and protective coverings. Through practical investigations, the children have strengthened their observation, prediction and scientific reasoning skills while developing a deeper understanding of the properties of materials and their uses.
History
Year 4 have continued to develop their understanding of Ancient Egypt, building on their previous learning to explore the fascinating story of Tutankhamun and the discovery of his tomb. The children have learned about the significance of Tutankhamun as a young pharaoh and investigated why the discovery of his nearly intact tomb by Howard Carter was such an important moment in history. They have explored the artefacts found within the tomb and considered what these discoveries reveal about Egyptian beliefs, daily life and burial practices. Through discussions, research and enquiry-based activities, the children have deepened their historical understanding and shown great enthusiasm for using evidence to learn more about one of Ancient Egypt’s most remarkable discoveries.
Computing
Year 4 have continued to build on their understanding of artificial intelligence, applying their knowledge to explore how AI is used in a variety of real-life situations. The children have investigated how AI systems recognise patterns, generate responses and learn from the information they are given, while considering both the advantages and limitations of this technology. They have taken part in thoughtful discussions about the importance of using AI safely and responsibly, questioning the reliability of AI-generated information and recognising why personal information should always be kept secure. Through these activities, the children have developed a deeper understanding of how artificial intelligence is shaping the world around them and the role it may play in the future.
Looking Ahead
Literacy
Using The Baker by the Sea by Paula White as inspiration, Year 4 will create an informative brochure exploring the different roles and occupations within the seaside village and explaining the importance of each person’s contribution to the community.
Maths
We will be moving on to position and direction, as well as consolidating previous topics, while ensuring that Times Tables Rock Stars (TTRS) practice is incorporated into part of the day.
R.E.
Eid al-Adha is an important Islamic festival, celebrated with prayers, charity and the sharing of food with family and the wider community.
P.E.
Rounders with Mr Mali and athletics with Mrs Bissmire.
