Welcome to Year 2 - Pine

Mrs Willer

It has been lovely to finally be back in the classroom with Year 2 the past two weeks. They have had a lovely return from the Easter holidays. In Literacy, we have been reading Grandad’s Camper. The class spoke about grandad's memories of his trips and created expanded noun phrases about a day at the beach. They used these expanded noun phrases to create poems. The class have been working hard during handwriting lessons and they have all impressed me with their progress of joining letters. In Maths, the class have been introduced to fractions. They have looked at equal and unequal groups before learning about halves and quarters. They then looked at identifying halves and quarters of shapes and amounts.

We have started a new topic of ‘Magnificent Monarchs’ and have been learning new vocabulary such as hierarchy, monarch and reign to help us with our learning through the unit. In Science, the children have started a unit called ‘Animal Survival’. They began by looking at larger habitats such as a desert or forest and thought about what they provide for certain animals. We then looked at invertebrates and classified them based on their features. The class then spent time looking for microhabitats in our school environment. Year 2 started a new PSHE topic called 'Keeping Safe'. They have discussed different situations such as riding a rollercoaster and put themselves on scale from completely safe to definitely unsafe. They have also spent time discussing how to keep safe around medicines.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be learning;

  • Literacy: Writing postcards and captions

  • Maths: Unit and non unit fractions

  • History: The British monarchy timeline

  • Science: Food chains
