Welcome to Year 2 - Pine

It's been lovely to have Year 2 back in the classroom since Christmas and to hear about all the lovely things they got up to over the holidays! We have started the new term with Mrs Fairhall joining us. She is a student teacher and will be with the class until the February half term.

In Literacy, we have started a new book, The Bear Under the Stairs. The class discovered clues and a letter about a hidden bear! They wrote questions to try to discover more about the hidden mystery. They have been writing letters of advice to William, the boy in the book, as he was feeling frightened.

In Maths, we have been looking at money. The class has been recapping different coins and notes—looking closely at their values. The children have spent time counting both coins and notes, as well as creating the same amounts using different coins.

In Science, we have started a 'Materials' unit by exploring the materials we see around school and objects made of plastic, glass, wood, etc.

In PE, Year 2 have started gymnastics. The children spent Friday morning exploring different ways to move, as well as different shapes they can create using their bodies, such as star and pike shapes.

In Computing, Pine class has started looking at spreadsheets. They have learned new vocabulary such as "cells" and how to enter numbers, letters, and images into those cells.

Our new Geography topic is coastlines. The class started the unit by locating the different oceans and seas around the UK. We spoke about how the UK is made up of islands and has a large amount of coastline. We have looked at both human and physical features found along the coastline, such as piers and cliffs. As a class, we recapped the points on a compass and described the directions we would travel if we were to move from one seaside town to another.

Over the next couple of weeks, we will be learning:

• Literacy: The Bear Under the Stairs – planning a story.
• Maths: Money – finding change.
• Geography: Human features of a coastal town.
• Science: Properties of materials.
