Oaklands Transition

Each year your child will move up to their next class and year group. Classes are linear at Oaklands and we don't have any mixed-year group classes. Children are not streamed for curriculum subject areas but are instead challenged inclusively within their own year group's class teaching.

Moving up to a new teacher can feel daunting but at Oaklands we aim to take all of the pressure away with very robust transition arrangements that include:

  • A whole week of transition with your child's new class teacher and in their new classroom. This takes place at the end of the preceding summer term within the week of Y6 transition day
  • Transition booklets accessible for every child either on the website (see below) or individually produced to support SEND needs
  • Robust teacher to teacher handover to ensure that best practise, knowledge and individual support needs are shared
  • Parent picnics to allow you the time to meet your child's new class teacher. (Weather and guidance permitting)

Experience has shown us that with these arrangements in place, any worries that your child may have are resolved before the summer break. This allows them a worry-free August and a very smooth transition when they start back in September.

As their parents, we know that you often also experience anxieties about class changes but rest assured that all of our decisions are based on the needs of the children. If you allow them sufficient settling time and are mindful that every teacher has a different personality, and that it can take time for children to adjust - just as it would be for us, you will be giving them the best chance to be successful in their new class.

Kind wishes
