Welcome to Year 6 – Hawthorne

Mr Butler

Learning Update

In Literacy, we have finished the book Suffragette. It is the true story about the real-life women who campaigned tirelessly to achieve the vote for women.

In Maths, we have been learning about fractions, decimals, and percentages. We have converted between them, as well as finding percentages of amounts.

In Geography, we have been looking at the natural resources of the Arctic and Antarctic. For example, these areas are often rich in resources like oil and minerals. We have also looked at how the tilt of the Earth causes 24 hours of sun or darkness at the poles.

In Science, we have continued looking at electricity and circuits. We have debugged (resolved problems in) circuits and tested various components like buzzers and motors.

In PE, we have started practising netball. We have learned about utilising space to gain ground on the opposition.

In French, we have started to learn how to discuss things at school!

In DT, we have been looking at bridges and how they can be strengthened. We have tested our theories using tape, straws, and paper to try and create load-bearing structures.

Coming up…

  • In Literacy, we will start the book The Boy in the Tower.
  • In Maths, we will look at statistics.
  • In Science, we will plan which circuit is best for which real-life situation.
  • In DT, we will design, create, and evaluate bridges!
