Learning Update

Year 4 have had a great start to the year and have all settled well into their new classroom! We have started the year with our new topic, ‘Invasion’. The class have developed their timeline-building skills and have looked closely at how invasions by new tribes caused others to withdraw from England. We have studied the Anglo-Saxons and explored how people lived during this period, including their homes, jobs, laws and leadership. The class have also used atlases to locate Anglo-Saxon towns and identify the kingdoms that were created following invasions from the east of England.

In Literacy, we started the term by reading ‘Varmints’. The class loved reading the book in instalments and watching clips alongside it, with each lesson ending on a cliffhanger. They have written persuasive letters and created posters to encourage others to look after the world around them. More recently, they have created their own explanation texts about the importance of plants in our environment and their life cycle. The children have done a great job of publishing these this week. In Maths, the class have focused on place value. They have spent time partitioning numbers, identifying missing numbers on number lines, finding 10, 100 or 1,000 more or less than a given number, and decoding Roman numerals.

In Art, we have started looking at weaving. The class have practised this skill by weaving pieces of paper together. Next week, they will explore how to weave different threads together to create a larger piece of fabric. In Science, they have been learning about the human digestive system. This unit began with a study of food chains and food webs. The class have since explored the different parts of the digestive system and will begin learning about types of teeth next week. They will also take part in an experiment investigating their bite.

Over the next two weeks, we will be learning: Literacy: ‘The Mermaid of Zennor’ Maths: Addition of two four-digit numbers Science: Types of teeth History: The first Viking landing
