Welcome to Hazel Class

Here are some photographs of our lovely learning environment so you can see our classroom. In Hazel Class, our teacher is Miss Poole. Our teaching assistants are Mrs Randall and Mrs Bissmire. We also have some other support staff who may help us throughout the week.

Spring Term 2026
Topic

Our topic for the first half term is 'Once Upon a Time'.

During this topic, we will be exploring a range of traditional fairy tales. We will be learning about the different characters commonly found in fairy tales and will identify the key features of fairy tales. Through reading, discussion and continuous provision activities, the children will develop their storytelling skills, create their own fairy tale characters and explore alternative endings to these familiar stories.

Phonics

At Oaklands we follow the Little Wandle Phonics scheme. This term we are moving on to the Phase 3 sounds. We will focus on saying the pure sounds and will then start to blend these sounds to read words. We will focus on correct letter formation and will progress to writing simple phrases and sentences. The children will also bring home a phonics book which they can share with a parent or carer.

Please visit the parents page on the Little Wandle Website for more support and guidance.

Maths

In Maths, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme. This term, we will begin with the unit Alive in 5, where the children will be introduced to the concept of zero, continue to develop their subitising skills, and will explore finding one more and one less. We will then move on to mass and capacity, where the children will use practical, hands-on activities to explore weight, and discover how size and shape affect capacity.

PE

In PE, we will be moving on to gymnastics. The children will be introduced to simple gymnastic shapes and will begin to think about transitioning smoothly between different movements. They will also have opportunities to use PE benches and a range of equipment to develop their balance, coordination and confidence.

Reminders

  • PE is on a Thursday. Please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit on this day.

  • Library books will be changed on a Friday.

  • Reading books will be collected in on a Thursday and will then be changed for Friday.

Please get in touch if you have any questions.
