Welcome to Hazel Class

Here are some photographs of our lovely learning environment so you can see our classroom. In Hazel Class, our teacher is Miss Poole. Our teaching assistants are Mrs Randall and Mrs Bissmire. We also have some other support staff who may help us throughout the week.

Summer Term 2026
Topic

Our topic for this half-term is 'Big Wide World'.

During this topic, the children will learn all about the world we live in. They will begin by exploring different forms of transport and thinking about places they have visited, such as holidays or local day trips.

The children will then be introduced to globes and maps, using them to explore different continents and countries from around the world. They will learn about hot and cold climates and begin to understand how animals are adapted to live in different environments.

We will also explore how people live around the world, identifying similarities and differences. This will include looking at different types of homes and a variety of foods from different cultures.

Phonics

At Oaklands we follow the Little Wandle Phonics scheme. This term we are moving on to our Phase 4 learning. In Phase 4, we consolidate the Phase 2 and Phase 3 graphemes and begin to blend adjacent consonants. We will have new tricky words to learn and these will be sent home each week via Tapestry.  We will focus on correct letter formation and will continue to write simple phrases and sentences. The children will also bring home a phonics book which they can share with a parent or carer.

Please visit the parents page on the Little Wandle Website for more support and guidance.

Maths

In Maths, we follow the White Rose Maths scheme.

This term, we will begin with the unit To 20 and Beyond, where the children will be introduced to the numbers 11–20. They will explore one more and one less, using ten frames and practical resources to help visualise amounts.

We will then move on to sharing and grouping amounts, where the children will begin to explore how to share quantities fairly and identify even and odd amounts.

The children will also explore shape and spatial reasoning, including manipulating and composing shapes. They will develop their ability to visualise, map, and build using a range of practical resources.

PE

In PE, we will be moving on to ball skills.

The children will be introduced to a range of ball skills and will focus on control and coordination. They will practise skills such as rolling, throwing, catching, and kicking.

They will have opportunities to work individually and with others, helping to build their confidence, teamwork, and spatial awareness.

Reminders

  • PE is on a Thursday. Please ensure your child comes to school in their PE kit on this day.

  • Library books will be changed on a Friday.

  • Reading books will be collected in on a Thursday and will then be changed for Friday.

Please get in touch if you have any questions.
